Thank you profusely for the advice to put the nut back on for a few threads. A little PB and some commitment and the wheel did pull off nicely. Removing the clockspring was nice and easy, too.
Now between the clockspring and the bearing there is a toothed retaining ring. I have linked to a photo of it. What is the best/easiest way to remove it? Can I do it non-destructively?
Before taking the photo I brushed away the crumbled bits of the old collar. I have two other questions:
Does the new collar go in with the flange toward the steering wheel or toward the floor?
Should I do anything about greasing the bearing while it's accessible?
