Now I know my wife's 1999 9-3 may be different, but she has had a similar problem. When it gets really hot, something fails in the electromagnet of the compressor solenoid which causes the compressor clutch to disengage. Once it cools down a bit it works again.
I was told replacing the compressor is the only fix, which if true is another engineering fail by the trolls - that part of the compressor should be DIY rebuildable.
