Ray's advice is correct, so try the 1 hour on trick first...
if that does not work... I had one radio that became problematic similar to your description, locked out (1993), and I tried everything. This was quite some time ago so I forget the exact sequence of events. However, along the way, I replaced the original head unit with a new old stock one ($20 off ebay!) and replaced the cage/amp assy also iirc with a rebuilt one. Anyway, I was still having an issue getting it to work and one of the radio rebuilders (wasyl maybe?) pointed out that there should be a 5 pin din connector on the back that has a few pins jumped (on a connector). I think it is to jump the connector when there is no EQ module or something. Somewhere I have the wiring diagram, but I can't find it at the moment. Anyway, since fixing that, no more issues. Maybe someone will fill in more details. This might only be for the later radios (1990-?)??
good luck!
