A bouncy gas gauge for me is caused by weak contact at the 7mm ground nut on the back of the gauge. Just fixed a bouncy gauge on my buddy's 87 vert. The tool I used is a 7mm Craftsman combo wrench. It's the Professional one so it's longer and slimmer than a generic combo wrench. I was able to get the boxed end of the wrench on that nut thru the speaker hole. Had my buddy looking thru the windshield letting me know which direction to move the wrench in that tight space. I just loosened the nut a very few degrees and then tightened it just few degrees more than the original setting. It's a tight space between intrument cluster and the defroster duct but it's doable without pulling the dash apart. I've had it help get a better reading on my temp gauge also by tightening the nut on the back of that gauge.
