Tend to agree - the rear axle is not strong and highly likely to bend even in low speed side impacts. Definitely pull the wheel off, but then place a straightedge along the hub vertically and see where it points. If it's anywhere other than basically straight up and down, that axle is bent, likely in the small space between the trailing arm and the hub. IME, the rest of the assembly is probably okay, but if you're getting a new axle you might as well replace it all.
Related, it's possible the shock(s) got bent too - especially on the side of the impact where the car body braces the top half while the bottom travels with the axle - resulting in the terrible ride. You basically end up with a solid link between car and axle since the shock won't compress anymore. That'll need replacement too.
