Where I'm at we have emissions test stations. They have an exhaust sniffer they put up the tailpipe as part of the test. When I'm in doubt I have them 'sniff' the open coolant resevoir with the engine running. If any hydrocarbons are in the coolant the sniffer will find them. It's my understanding that hydrocarbons in the coolant are not good for the cooling system. Rough on the all the components. Coolant coming out the tailpipe will take out the cat in short order. I have a mechanic friend who will remove the cat immediately when the exhaust contains coolant and he can't get to the HG in a day or two. He rinses the cat and shelves it until the HG has been replaced. I doubt if there is anyway to predict the HG longevity. I've seen a couple engines lately where they seemed to run fine one day then they suddenly started dumping coolant in the crankcase.
