So I pulled the car apart, testing this and checking that. I did the diagnostic test on the LH control unit (brain), and it seemed to be ok. I swapped out the fuel pump relay and the system relay from another car and it didn't make a difference. I did a socket test on the fuel pump relay socket as the Bently book recommends. I connected sockets 85 and 86 via my voltmeter, and there was no voltage. This indicates the ground at 85 is bad, which would explain the unpredictable nature of this issue.
Thing is, the schematic shows 85 runs to 17 in the LH control unit (brain). I'm not sure where to check for this ground. The schematic shows the most direct ground is by the lifting point by the front of the engine like Cmyles suggested. I found that the end of the wire had fallen off so I put a new end on, but it didn't make any difference. I even juggled the ends while I cranked it. Perhaps the ground between the lifting eye and the brain is compromised. Where would I look for this guy?
I noticed also, that upon cranking the pump typically won't run. But if I let the key rebound left to the ignition on position, and then turn it right to start, the pump will hum once ever two turns. If I do this enough, the engine will start to sputter to life, but won't turn over. This seems like an electronic issue, as if the system doesn't know when to turn the pump on.
This must be stupid simple, but damn I haven't gotten it licked yet!
