Did you put thread sealant on the three small screws that hold the slave to the transmission case? Without sealant oil will seep out past the threads. Ask your mechanic to see if sealing those dries things up before pulling the clutch out. Otherwise, if the seal was old and ready to split it may be that sliding the shaft out and back in was the last straw.
