Hi all, I'm a long time Saab owner, having gone thru several 9000s, a four year Saab hiatus, and 9-5 Aero Wagon since July. No C900s until today, though.
With my son about to begin driving (15th birthday tomorrow), I've been looking around for an inexpensive first car for him, preferably something project-like but able to drive itself into my garage. Most cars in the sub $1k realm in NeOhio seem to be stolen, rusted out/unsafe, or the 'sellers' never return calls, texts, or emails.
As of about an hour ago, I now have a very dirty but rust-free Texas 91 base model in the garage. Sadly, its an auto, but it met all three of my main criteria. The rust free part kind of makes the price of admission worth it; I can fix most mechanical stuff.
The slushbox shifts OK and it has a recent head gasket; car has a lot of mostly minor issues so I'm sure I'll be doing lots of SN searching and asking of stupid questions in the near future. Also diving back into the Townsend site again after a long absence.
We'll be diving in with a degrease, ATF/oil change, and squawk list formation in the morning (happy 15th, get to work :-) ). I already have a bunch of rust reformer, POR15 and FluidFilm to keep the rust free thing going.
Before we went to look at it, my son said the C900 was ugly. However, he got in and loves how it looks 'vintage', plus he's a rally fan, so he likes the heritage. Both he and my 10y/o daughter are amazed by the roll up windows. Kind of like the rotary phone they found at my parents' house a few years ago.
