Dear Cmyles,

I checked the 4:2 manual, and you are 100% on the mark. It is indeed the detent spring.

May I give you some further background information so that I may ask your considered opinion.

This car has 180K miles. We acquired the car with 58K miles.

Starting at 60K miles, the trans oil has been changed every 10K miles and the strainer has been changed every 30K miles.

Of course, each time the strainer was replaced, the pan and it's magnet were always cleaned of any filings which have always been very minimal.

The car has had three major overheat situations during it's tenure with us. Each time, the trans oil was immediately changed out after its overheat issue was resolved.

Approx 8K miles ago, the transmission exhibited a significant delay from 2nd to 3rd. All other shift points are fine with the transmission exhibiting no other issues. At my suggestion, the car has been driven with the shifter in Drive, shifting momentarily to 2nd and then back
to Drive in order to get the transmission to shift into 3rd which it did smoothly

Being thoroughly unfamiliar with automatic transmissions, my assumption was that perhaps after 180K, it was time to adjust the front and rear brake bands for the first time.

Is it probable that the separate detent spring was responsible for the delayed shift ?

Am I about to go through some significant work for an unlikely return on time investment ?

My only clue as to what to expect for life expectancy of an automatic was based on the good olden days (am I giving my age away?) of GM's with either Powerglides or Turbo Hydra-Matic, and assuming that the rest of the car would actually stand up, 120K unto 150K was considered super stellar.

Do you believe that this is worth the effort to remove that valve body, replace the sheared detent spring, or do you believe that given the delayed shifting, it may just be that the clutch pack and/or bands are just normally wearing out.

Please advise.

Thank you in advance,

Sincerely,
Robert
