Many of us remove the reverse lockout feature. There are too many cases of damage caused by other driver's such as: bent keys, broken shift levers, cracked lock cylinders. Stiffness in the lock is often from food/beverage goo accumulating into the lock area. Spilled coffee or soda is often the culprit. The minimum fix possibility is to pour a little boiling water into the key slot area. Sometimes that will wash out some sugar and free things up. I generally get carried away and remove the console and clean the innards. Grease the pivot points and get rid of the reverse lock lever and spring. Put the lock cylinder in a pan of boiling water. If that doesn't improve the lock cylinder action I soak it in solvent, blow it out and lube with light oil.
