I tried soldering because it makes good sense as being the best way of joining the wires .... The SAAB wires are stainless steel and solder doesn't stick to it.
Go to a good electronics supply store (or even Fry's) and get some waterproof butt splices that have integral heat shrink tubing.
Quite a few years ago, there was a long discussion on the C900 board about splicing O2 sensor wires. Ari, an engineer from Sikorsky, pointed out that the O2 sensor circuit is high impedance and whatever resistance might be added by butt splices is insignificant compared to the rest of the circuit.
