Not having the check valve installed would or could make the engine push oil out the nearest leak path when under boosted conditions. Once you checked ( stopped ) the boost pressure from entering the valve cover, then it shouldn't have made a difference in the lifter noise.
I'm guessing that since the charge pressure was only 1 or 2 psi, then not having the check valve didn't affect the pressurization of the crankcase.
That pressure relief valve on the front ( firewall side ) is pesky to get to. Since you have good pressure, I'm not sure I would go that direction, but Walt had really good ideas on the filter, etc.
It could be that the lifters just gave up -- just one bad one can make a heck of a racket.
Good oil pressure by the way, and also good it is up in the hollow bolt.
On new engine builds, I'll turn over the engine until I see old coming out of that bolt, as well as turn it over to see that the turbo supply is steady and plentiful. No plugs and pull the fuel pump fuse too......
