Rack install idea....

I have waiting in my garage a reman rack and plan to tackle it this weekend. Being one to perform a batch of repairs at once, I also have inner drivers, wheel bearings, brakes, and some cleaning around the general area slated for attention.
Having read through old posts on rack installs, one of the chief complaints seems to be the lack of space when rotating the rack for removal, and often mentioned is the speedo drive as an area of conflict. This got me thinking about the possibility of removing the drive cable, removing the companion flange bolts and rotating the flange enough to get the speedo cable boss clear of the space conflict others have mentioned. I figure that rotating it clockwise 120 degrees and reinstalling a couple bolts to hold it in place might help give some needed clearance.
I don't like the idea of removing it all together and leaving the diff case open during the rack R & R. Perhaps complete removal of the companion flange would be ok, provided I fashioned some sort of blanking plate to seal off the diff case.
Has anyone out there tried this before? Do you all have any other suggestions or tricks you have come up with to ease the pain of a rack R & R?
