The early and late tensioners will look different on the outside. Look at a stock photo of a new one and look under the AC compressor. The new one's have the 12mm bolt on the top for the ratcheting spring. The early one doesn't have that bolt and would have a flat top. IMO you'll need a late tensioner before you even start thinking a bout a new chain. As CMyles says with a lower miles engine a chain issue is VERY unlikely.
