Here is my How-To on replacing a worn timing chain in a 16v engine. I haven't done one in a 8v but I imagine it's much the same.

1. Remove the flywheel cover and turbo plumbing.
2. Remove the sparkplug wires and sparkplugs. Use a rag to cover the sparkplug holes.
3. Remove the AC compressor if it's on the engine. You can just push it aside if your system is charged.
4. Remove the 12mm bolt on the chain tensioner. Put the spring and wee little plastic foot aside.
5. Take off the chain tensioner from the engine.
6. Take off the head cover
7. Put a rag into the engine, so nothing falls into the engine.
8. Loosen the caps, so the valves aren't in danger when the engine is turned. Make sure the bolts allow enough space so the caps can be moved upward freely. Do not remove cap bolts.
9. Cut off a link on the chain between the sprockets. Put an extra rag directly under it as not to lose track of any pieces of metal.
10. Take a sturdy and thick wire tie and use it as a temporary link. Make sure it's spaced as close as the other links are spaced. Use it to connect the new chain with the old chain.
11. Have a helper turn the fly wheel clockwise. (towards the drivers wheel) Gently keep tension on the old chain as it leaves the engine and the new chain as it enters the engine.
12. Keep going till the old chain is out, and the new chain is in it's place. Use two wire ties to attach the new chain to the sprockets.
13. Attach the ends together using the connecting link. I do this between the sprockets.
14. Set the engine to top dead center.
15. Set the marks on the end of the cam shaft to align with the marks on the cap near the sprockets. You may have to remove one or both sprockets to do this.
16. Make sure the chain on the exhaust side is tight, as well as the chain between the sprockets. The chain on the intake side should be loose. (the tensioner will take up the slack)
17. Put the chain tensioner into the engine. Do not put in the spring, wee foot or 12mm bolt until the tensioner itself is installed. (46fp) If you do, it will push out the adjusting foot.
18. Install the wee foot, spring and 12mm bolt into the tensioner.
19. Tighten down the caps to proper torque setting. Bentley says 11 fp.
20. Slowly turn the flywheel two full revolutions in the direction of normal engine rotation. I believe it is counterclockwise. The tensioner should click several times before you finish your first rotation. Make sure everything is turning freely and the valves aren't making contact with the piston heads.
21. Remove and make sure all rags are accounted for.
22. Replace the head cover and put the spark plugs back in. As well as the sparkplug wires.
23. Put the flywheel cover on, and install any turbo plumbing.
24. Start the car and make sure everything is ok. It should sound a lot quieter without the worn timing chain striking the head cover.
