After changing my search approach I found some answers:
1. LH and Trionic expect the same speed signal, so 2,458 pulses per mile, or 1/4 of the pulses sent by the Saab 9000 VSS on the gearbox.
2. Some Volvo nuts suggest that the speed sensor doesn't have to be remotely accurate for LH to behave itself - it just needs to know 0 or >0.
The reason why I wondered about this is that I'm in the early stages of replacing the gauges in my SPG but didn't want to upset the LH. I'm going to use a Dakota Digital VSS conversion box to drop the VSS output to the 2458 pulses that LH expects and then run an aftermarket speedometer based on that number. Solved! Probably. ;)
