I replaced the head gasket and it doesn't want to idle now. As soon as it starts up, it will rev up to 2500 - 3000 rpm then go way low, like 200 rpm and the whole motor shakes. It will usually stall then but I can kind of keep it alive by feathering the throttle. If I disconnect the AMM it runs kind much better but of course that's not a long term solution.
Thanks to a lot of searching and reading on this forum, I have done a lot of checking and troubleshooting, I'll try to list them out here:
* double and triple checked the chain timing, I am sure it is perfect
* distributor timing is good, set to where it was before, also checked with timing light with AMM disconnected (Idle was stable but a bit high).
* rotor, cap, plugs, and wires are all OK
* grounds are good
* vacuum is good
* All electrical connections that I took off (fuel injectors, temperature sensor, head ground plugs) should all be good
* Ran through the bentley tests for the check engine codes (only saw No RPM (engine was off), no signal from AMM (since I unhooked it), and Mixture is rich.
* Ran through the bentley diagnostics for the LH computer, system relay, throttle position sensor, etc and it's all good
* AMM does the burn off as it should
* O2 sensor is recent, likely not affecting running right at start up
* AIC valve was tested, seems OK in terms of resistance and during the LH diagnostic routine I could hear it opening and closing once per second.
The car ran well before the head gasket work, so I'm trying to focus on what might have changed when I did the work, but I'm running out of ideas. I think it's time to try a new AMM... Any help would be very welcomed :-)
