A few years ago, there was a post that had a photo of the engine bay of a C900 that had the entire transverse drivetrain (up to and including the Macpherson strut towers) of a NG 900 grafted in.
Not something for the faint-of-wallet, but doable with a bit of ingenuity.
Unless the engine has been driven w/o coolant or oil, it should be able to go on for a few hundred k miles with a fresh set of bearings, a chain, and maybe a headgasket.
You mentioned in an earlier post that it's a '93 900S. Consider doing a headgasket and checking the mating surfaces of the head and block for corrosion while it's out.
When I had the engine out of my '90 a few weeks ago, all I did to the engine was replace the front & rear main seals, sealed the oil pan gasket w/ Permatex Avation form-a-gasket (thanks C Myles for the suggestion), replaced the turbo return & oil pickup O rings, and seal all the bolts with Permatex No. 2 (thanks C Myles for the suggestion).
It used to be "oil, oil everywhere". Now it's "not a drop that leaked" (very unlike your average C900).
