On the 88, there isn't a big O ring on the fuel pump seal. It has that bell shaped rubber horn instead. I doubt if it is the small square seal ring of the fuel sender.
I'm thinking it might be the pressure side of the main fuel pump, either the sealing rings for the outlet, or the connection of the plastic line to the metal banjo is weeping. If that was the case though, there would be a pool of gas, not just a smell.
I'm inclined to think it might be the lines that go into the body for the fuel tank evaporative system, and is either plugged up or the solenoid isn't operating.
SO --- QUESTION FOR THE OWNER --- when you open the gas cap, do you hear the sound of air escaping or entering when the tank is nearly empty after a fillup? If that is the case, then the evaporative system is not functioning and the fumes are not being recycled to the intake manifold.
So, it could be several possibilities, and it could be multiple problems at the same time.
