The thing to bear in mind is that these cars are at least 22 years old. Mine are 25 and 26 years old. Even the best cared-for 900 will have some issues and, unless you have a good budget for maintenance performed by others, you'll end up doing a lot of work yourself and will pay to have a transmission rebuild.
The engines, themselves, will last for a very large number of miles as long as the maintenance is good and are never run w/o oil or coolant.
Other than rust, as Peter mentioned, and transmission failure, it's the little almost unobtainable parts that can take them off the road: brake booster seal (up through '89) and ABS accumulator ('90 and later) come to mind right now.
That said, my preference is '88 or later due to the newer brakes. The Turbos are fun but the non-turbos are perfectly fine, too.
