CA smog, sometimes you just need a new cat... Posted by kenS [Email] (#606) [Profile/Gallery] (more from kenS) on Sun, 25 Oct 2015 08:07:03 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
Once again, the biennial smog test. For you non-CA Saabers, you have to take it to a licensed "Test Only" facility, and they dyno test at 15 & 25 mph, NOX limits are 791 & 511 ppm. Car ('87 900T)has 220K and runs well, O2 sensor cycles properly, timing set to 14-15 (they allow a +/- 2 error). The car has always passed, but just barely--- two years ago it had 739 & 361, the time before that it was 655/481, before that it was 751/473. But this time it was 907 & 378, suggesting the converter just couldn't get hot enough to work properly at the lower speed. So I had the local Saab_guys look at it, and they confirmed the temperature difference across the cat was "0" and recommended a replacement. The resulting numbers were 2 & 5(!). HC numbers also dropped from 79/44 to 11 & 2. Old cat was original, I'm guessing it was probably close to dead by 2005 or so. So when the usual tricks (timing, new plugs & rotor, trying to get everything hot before the test, etc.) don't work, at least think about replacing the converter!
