I decided to remove the crash beam thing on the driver's side so that I could get the forward control arm bracket out. I tried to preserve the beam by cutting the welds to the body. That worked for the front end (where bumper is) but the rear end, which mounts to the tower-like thing with the coil springs... I just had to go crazy with the angle grinder and dremel to get it out. It took about 2 hours. That corner has a large amount of this wax-like rustproofing. Unfortunately after I chipped it all away, there was rust underneath. Not bad, but it crept in. You can see from the attached picture (circled area) that this was all under black paint before I started tearing it apart. You can see its brown from rust. There was a good deal of greasy rust dust under there that I vacuumed up. Moral of the story... its a good thing I removed the crash beam to investigate/clean the area underneath. The rust is just starting to creep into that area. I want to car to last a very long time, so taking everything apart as far as possible seems to be the right decision.
