OEM heater valve peculiarity

I managed to track down a used heater control valve #9480997, for use in my 92 900 with a failed Protech part. This was reportedly from a 1984 900.
The odd thing is that the rod only has one quarter of turn of rotation rather than 180 degrees. It is clearly hitting the normal stop at high heat position, and appears to hit a stop on low heat but earlier than normal. I think it is hitting an actual stop but maybe it is jamming. Too soon to say if this position cuts off heat to the core.
A second odd thing is that I had to flip one end of the control rod (pry apart the end and reassemble after rotating 180 degrees) to get the rod to mesh between the control knob and the doodad on the heater valve...
Any thoughts on what might be going on? Ken
