I've never heard of a CPS having a thermal issue before -- unlike the ignition module. The CPS starts to fail hot or cold and then just dies, and the car is inop. The CPS on the '89 is probably behind the crankshaft pulley against the firewall, so it is not really feasible to get to. If you have a nitrogen tank and can freeze the entire aluminum cover behind the pulley, by conduction the cold might get over to the CPS, but I don't think you need to try that for the reasons mentioned above.
However, as a precaution, I would start taking Saabstalker's advice on preparing a distributor for using it as a signal device when the CPS fails. What can be a five hour job turns into a 30 minute job with that approach, but you have to have the additional distributor prepared for the swap.
