Yesterday, my 1991 900S, 5-speed, N/A suddenly died instantly, just after start-up, right in the driveway. It was like someone turned they key off. I immediately tried to restart it, but no go. I waited a couple minutes, and it fired right up. The same thing happened again later in the day. Since I have renewed many of the fuel and electrical components, I suspected the ECU, and having a spare, I did the swap. When I turned the key to the "on" position, not cranking the engine, both cooling fans came on. This was with a stone cold engine. I started the engine and drove it a mile or two and it ran fine. Both fans continued to run. The ECU I removed from the vehicle is a Bosch unit, 0 280 000 901, (SAAB #8788507). The unit I installed came from my 1991 parts car. This unit has an all-black cover with a label with the following information: "SAAB, 8827529, 0 280 000 901, etc." Since the BOSCH numbers are the same, and after some research on the internet, I determined that they should be interchangeable.
I'm not sure what's going on. One concern I have is that a few years back, I performed the "Townsend" update to make both the main fan, and the AC fan both come on together. Just wondering if the new all-black ECU may be confused with the update…………….. I am hoping someone can shed some light on this situation. Thanks in advance!
