1979-1993 & 94 Conv [Subscribe to Daily Digest] |
For the past few weeks, I've been trying to track down an on-again off-again no boost issue in my '85 SPG. I lost all boost for a week or two, did some of the tests with unplugging the solenoid and clamping off the wastegate hose, checked and replaced vacuum hoses as needed, replaced the transducer, cleaned contacts on the APC and the turbo started working--for a week--then went out again.
I did a lot of research on the board and I was convinced it was a stuck wastegate and hit it with some lube and worked it in and out, but it didn't seem stuck. Went for a test drive and still no boost. I pulled to the side of the road with the engine running and jostled the solenoid wires and the solenoid started clicking. Drove off and suddenly the turbo was boosting better than ever--just going into red when it rarely crossed the orange-red divide before.
I knew that the wires to the solenoid were the original 1985 deteriorating type wrapped in copious quantities of electrical tape and that the clip piece that should attaches the wires to the solenoid was missing. The wires must have been shorting out somewhere along the line or just not making a good connection due to the missing clip. A quick trip to the junkyard and with my wallet $1.10 lighter, I had replacement wires with clip to splice in. It was amazing to see just how bad the original '85 wires were when I stripped off all the electrical tape. There was absolutely no wire housing to be found. Just a big flaky mess inside all those wraps of electrical tape holding it together.
I wanted to add this post to the board because in my searching I never ran across anyone suggesting this as a potential no boost solution. Of course, it will only apply to the '85s or '86s with the flaky wires.
