Not sure what the algorithm on those things are, but the oil change interval appears to be accelerated by cold starts. I noticed on my company vehicle, it goes faster when I am doing a bunch of short trips around town. I will get much more mileage between intervals when I'm out doing much more open road traveling.
With that being said, I have always gone by the "dipstick test" Basically, I pull the dipstick and look at the color of the oil. When I cannot read the text engraved on the dipstick thru the oil, it's time to change it....Typically ends up being around 4000 miles for my wife's car, which gets mostly around-town mileage, and almost 6000 miles for my van, which gets mostly highway miles (and also holds 6 quarts)
Using my method, I've noticed that newer engines don't dirty the oil up anywhere near as much as older engines. The 3000-mile rule was made in the days of carburated engines that dirtied up the fuel rather quickly. With the much more precise fuel metering EFI gives, significantly less soot and crud is made in the combustion process.
