I agree, best to use hypoid gear oil for our inline transmissions. I guess a lot of folks figure that MT90 is better than motor oil so they try it and find out it is too thick for shifting at cooler temperatures. Modern engine oils appear to be no longer suitable for our transmissions because of the reduction in ZDDP.
I really like Redline MTL, but one of my cars is running 10W40 motorcycle oil with decent enough results but I only drive my C900s in the summer. Some of the '91 and up transmissions shift well with just about any oil in them, even ATF.
MT90 and VW G70 are very different. G70 is one of the thinnest gear oils out there at around 6 Centistokes, far thinner than MT90 and even MTL. The G052 911 is a lube designed specifically for our type of inline hypoid transmission, but thicker than G70. This lube goes into model "012" and related VW/Porsche/Audi transmissions. Similar enough to our transmissions that a guy built a 99 with all wheel drive using one of these transmissions:
