Transmission knocking

First, I did do some searching on SAABNET, and didn't see my exact problem, but did get some clues.
My '84 900S (364,000 miles) has developed transmission trouble (I think). It is a 5 speed. I parked it last fall but still start it up regularly.
Description of problem:
It had the reverse pop-out issue, tens of thousands of miles ago, so I did Tom Townsend's Reverse Popping Out fix explained on his website. That cured that. Last year, the SAAB had developed a LOUD gear whine when decelerating in first gear (sounded like an old logging truck). I heard it, somewhat quieter, in 2nd gear. Then, one day during full throttle acceleration in first gear, I heard and felt a POP. The car still moved itself, but first gear then had a POP POP POP cyclical sound with throttle applied. I drove on for a while longer last summer (gingerly in first gear), then I parked it last fall and took tags/insurance off it.
Now, after I start it up, put in neutral, and let out the clutch, there is a knock, knock, knock sound in the engine bay. Noise goes away if I push in the clutch. I been able to let out the clutch with it engaged in a gear, without the car moving or the engine dying. Most times it engages, sometimes not. Car will still move under its own power, to some extent.
I'm guessing it was pinion bearing(s) that went bad and has caused chipped gear teeth.
Any ideas? Rebuild transmission? Time to let this one go to pasture?
Thanks,
Micah in NC
