New Distributor, Won't Start

I installed a new distributor this afternoon and now my 86 SPG won't turn over. It cranked for a bit then I heard a loud pop, which I remember hearing a long time ago when I had the wires in the wrong order. I've double checked the wires' location on the cap and they are correct (1 at 11 oclock, 2 at 1 oclock, 3 at 7 oclock, 4 at 5 oclock as viewed from the front).
The only thing I can think of that could be off is that the rotor on the new distributor went on and fit in 180 degrees from where the original rotor was pointed. It worried me at first but it was the only way to get the distributor back into place and match up to the cam.
Any similar experiences or ideas? Maybe I need to rotate my wires 180 degrees to match the new rotor's location? I'm stuck....Thanks.
