Hello everyone
A little back story on this transmission, original to the 88 turbo it's in, unknown miles, 17,000 miles since pinion bearing, lay shaft and adjoining bearing replacement. Recently replaced bearing in the upper primary sprocket.
Now for the noise, it sounds like a gear whine that is the loudest in 1st gear and progressively gets quieter in the higher gears and cant be heard in 5th. It is rpm dependent, the higher the rpm the higher pitched then gets quieter in lower rpms. During the 1-2 shift as i depress the clutch and back off the throttle it makes a quick whine.
This is the 2nd and 4th C900 I've owned and the noise sounds like every other C900 manual I've had, just louder and the noise during the 1-2 shift. After the rebuild the noise level was like it was before, minus the pinion whine. It was like this for about 15000 miles then it changed. I did some research here and it sounded like it could be the upper primary sprocket bearing so i replaced it and nothing changed.
After I noticed the transmission getting louder I dropped the oil to see if there was any metal fragments on the drain plug, but it just had a very little bit of the very fine metal sludge. I checked it again when i replaced the upper bearing and it looked the same. The transmission continues to shift fine and drive fine and the noise has remained at the same level.
Could this be caused by a bearing or gears? I was thinking about changing the bearings behind the lower sprocket but I've heard that they rarely go bad.
Thanks for any help that gets me pointed in the right direction.
Jamie
