I just went thru rebuilds on 4 on my spare 87-88 5 speeds. I sent them to Rob at Scanwest in March. He explained that the small cluster bearing on the layshaft is the weak link. When there is wear in that area the cluster bearing goes, the shaft gets pitted, and the inside bearing surface of the cluster gear set wears. Sometimes if you get to it early the cluster gear set it is reusable. Generally rebuilding those earlier boxes isn't recommended because the cluster gear set is no longer available and good used ones are rare.
