is it the heater core or the heater valve? My heater valve went bad on on a trip with my girlfriend and we returned via tow truck. My engine ran hot and the temp gauge didn't indicate overheating. Plenty of coolant in the car. I was told by the machine shop that when no coolant is present for the temp sensor, the temperature will be normal. Anyway, I had to have the head resurfaced but it turns out that my heater mixing valve went bad. The o-rings were out of shape and I ordered a heater valve from France for $145 plus shipping(http://www.rbmsaabparts.com/). In the mean time,I connected the heater hose together with plumbing from the hardware store. Mainly two 90 degree elbows and the old heater hose I replaced. I am installing my new heater valve today. Without the heater valve, the car gets extremely cold.
