You can clean a headlight dozens of times w/o damage to the silvering. The only solvent that goes into the headlight is a little bit of good glass cleaner that gets spritzed onto the paper towel.
With the alcohol & rice method, maybe two cleanings before the microns-thick reflecting surface is compromised.
Anyway, enough proselytizing. I was just passing along something I found on Saabnet.
