They can definitely clunk a bit. Not sure about band adjustment, but I would change the fluid and see. Very simple to drain and refill, but only use Ford Type F and maintain perfect cleanliness. The automatic is known for being fragile, but a good part of that is due to people rarely changing the ATF. Just draining and refilling will remove *some* of the contaminated fluid, but significant fluid remains so it is a dilution process. Thus I would suggest doing an ATF change pretty much every oil change to keep the fluid fresh (some advise a 3x drain flush, others doing a full replace - see turbocon86's site for this, but it's more involved).
