I'd suggests a skilled mechanic's ears.
Shaking only on decel might point to a bad tripod cup, that someone already swapped left/right (so it wouldn't be on acceleration).
Roaring, I'll interpret as bearing noise - so you have to determine which one. Primary worries are wheel bearing or pinion bearing I think... both are going to be road speed and load dependent (louder, higher pitch at higher road speed). Unloading the powertrain probably won't change the noise of the wheel bearing, it will probably change the noise of the pinion a little.
