That "gear" is actually at the very end of the main shaft, so this is going to be a very major rebuild. The cheap way to go about this is to buy a used transmission. Search car-part.com. That's a service that links junkyards. Virtually any 5-speed will fit; look for one with a "7" as the third number after GM. That number refers to the main gear ratio - anything with a 6 wil be geared very low and "8s" are unicorns. Its a bit of a crapshoot, But I did very well with my junkyard unit
In fact there's a transmission advertised as having less than 60K miles on it at a yard in Scranton PA for $400 (1-800-648-1441)- search under multiple years. I found that one by searching the 1988 model year.
There's a major design change rthat took place in 1990. The earlier transmissions have weaker pinion bearing housings and there's a wealth of information in this forum on how to select one and the pros and cons. You may do better by getting a good junkyard unit, driving it for a few year, and then having that unit rebuilt. Or swap in a junk yard unit and then send that one out for rebuilding. For about $200, Eeuroparts sells an upgraded pinion bearing housing assembly, so you can go with the older model and upgrade it to the better pinion bearing assembly during a rebuild.
For rebuilding, you are going to pay about $2,200 (the price the last time I checked) plus shipping. Fortunately, the 900 manual transmission weighs less than 150 pounds on a pallet, and so can be shipped via Fed Ex ground or UPS for about $100-125. The two biggest names in rebuilt transmission are Eriksson (Saybrook, CT) or ScanWest (somewhere on the west coast). I had Eriksson rebuild one once and they do a nice job. They will ship you a replacement and you send your old one back as a core, or they will rebuild your current unit.
Swapping out the transmission is not hard, just time consuming (plan on about 3-4 days (50-60 hours) the first time you do it. You'll spend a lot of time labeling, photographing and pondering the first time you do it. After having swapped transmission or engines 5-6 times now, I can do it in two very long days (25 hours).
Where are you located?
