I hope the link to the photos shows up. There should be two pics -- one is a 1982 turbo camshaft part number on the cam, and the other is the various camshaft specs for 8 valve type engines.
It is odd that there are only 2 cams listed in the parts catalog for the 1981-1986. Looks to me like there are more grinds than part numbers.
To explain how the edges of the lobes could have become chipped -- the bucket or tappet is crowned when new. It allows the cam to rotate the bucket on each hit, so it indexes in a circular fashion. When the top of the bucket wears out, there is no ability to rotate the bucket, so the edges of the cam are probably hitting very hard, and it fatiqued the edges, leading to the crack propagation, leading to the separation.
What do your buckets ( tappets ) look like? My god, the rest of it looks great for an early 80s car, the heat shield looks like new!!! Are you in some pleasant climate or ??
I just got a load of buckets in, haven't had a chance to review the crown or lack of it.
