Hmm, I'll have to check the distributor - I recall reading that the 16v non-turbo had the sensor behind the crank pulley, but I'll figure that out and proceed accordingly.
I've read that the crank pulley announces it's impending demise by screeching loudly - mine isn't making noise, nor does it seem to be wobbling, so perhaps I can get away without replacing. Agreed that parts quality of modern replacements isn't likely to be as good as the original. Good call on the steering hoses - I'm sure they're ancient.
It's not a job I'm looking forward to, believe me, but given the ridiculous fight I just had to remove the right rear shock (lower bolt fused to the sleeve, had to cut it out in sections with a Sawzall) in order to weld in new metal for the upper mounting point, I can't envision it being much worse. Famous last words, of course....
