I'll be honest, I've not ever been particularly analytical with it, but in these cars, the CEL mostly comes on for 1 reason: time to replace the O2 sensor. Every time it has come on for me, I swap the O2 sensor and the problem goes away.
That said, if you live anywhere near the rust belt, "swapping the O2 sensor" is not a walk in the park. Generally, trying to just change the sensor alone from under the car is easily the worst job I have ever done on cars (and I do quite a bit of DIY work). It is now to the point that I always buy a new pipe, new sensor, and swap the assembly, at least on the non-turbos that we have. They rust in so badly that I have not even been able to remove a sensor intact with the pipe out of the car on the garage floor, torches and everything. Way too much salt on the roads here! Hopefully you live in the south and don't have this problem!
