I checked -- there is a gas smell, but very faint even after several tries cranking. To test other possibilities I used a (poor quality) multi-meter and it was showing current at the terminal on the coil. (I replaced the coil once with one from the local auto parts store; expensive but not good, it was very hot to the touch but the engine WAS running with it, I have since replaced it with a mail-order one which gets warm but is MUCH less hot.) I then disconnected the spark plug wire on the plug nearest the firewall while leaving the plug in the engine in place -- and put another spark plug into the wire's socket .... and connected the base of this new plug (the screw-in threads part) to the negative terminal of the battery (to ground it) with a jumper cable while elevating the plug so I could see it, to see if it would spark. I cranked the engine; no spark from the plug. Rechecked connections and retried -- no spark. Installed in-line plug tester in front of the spark plug I was using as a test and elevated it too so I could see if there was any result -- no spark at plug. Rechecked all connections and tried again -- nothing.
This suggests the problem is in the distributor (I think, I am just a wannabe mechanic) but I have no idea what to check next, or replace next.....
