Really weird startup noise - HELP!

Hope you all had a great Thanksgiving Holiday! Anyway ..... for the past two days on startup I'm hearing a strange metallic noise - kind of like a squeaky or rusty water pump you might find on a farm - inside the car it kind of sounds like a high whistle. it's not a squealing sound like from loose belts, and i wouldn't say it's a grinding sound necessarily. just kind of an abrasive, hollow metallic noise. NOW ... after a couple of minutes, all of this noise completely goes away. the car drives fine - shifts fine. not losing any water, oil level is fine.

since this noise seems to occur when the engine is cold, wondering what occurs as the engine warms up to make this noise disappear.

as far as i can tell, the noise maybe is ocurring in the area of the AC compressor/water pump. definitely near the firewall.

any help really appreciated.
