A local Ace Hardware had a plentiful and precise collection of the proper-size bolts: 10 x 1.5 x 30.
I grabbed ten from the first bin and and then upon further scanning, found another bin holding versions with the 10.9 rating (same rating as the original). I quickly grabbed and replaced my initial selection.
They aren't heat-treated and have 17mm heads but they're close enough.
So Walt, I think the pitch on both the 17 and 19mm heads is always 1.5. I've learned from some more archive research that the 900 went from 17 to 19mm heads between 1989 and 1990. I don't know why the change was made.
And thank you Cmyles for checking and the offer. My eyes were bugging out this morning after twisting the one bolt in half and I was considering having to put a notice out on this board for replacements. I suddenly wasn't trusting any of my original bolts. I'm indebted to the people on this board for moments like this.
I'm including a link to the page from the 900 service manual that lists the torques for the different head sizes. 63 ft-lb for the 19mm heads. I just thought I'd be official and scientific by checking it this morning before cranking the bolts back to proper tightness until WHOA!OH-NO!DID-I-JUST?BUT-WAIT-I-USED-THE-RIGHT-SPEC...broken bolt scenario. The Bentley manual uses a straight copy of this page.
I'm also including a pic of the original bolts (including snapped) and the replacements installed.
I installed the Ace Hardware versions and used Permatex Aviation Gasket for the sealant. I was suddenly superstitious regarding that earlier Permatex Seal + Lock stuff that I mentioned so I resorted to the older and simpler gasket compound. I torqued in stages, first at 30, then 40 and then finally at 55 lb-ft.
Got everything back together by dusk, let it run for a few minutes and will check tomorrow for any sign of that persistent and plentiful leak which prompted this morning's adventure.
There's a 92 900 Turbo on Craiglist here in Los Angeles for pretty cheap and I'm going to now go stare at it and analyze what might be wrong and then not do anything in regard to a purchase.
Thanks all for your commentary and help.
