I thought MY method was the Saab standard...it was described to me by a Saab shop in Boston back in the late 80s when I was preparing my first 99 for a cross-country run. And later at a Saab repair shop where I worked in Virginia, this was the shop standard if you had to replace any balljoint. Yeah, you COULD try to replace one joint at a time without removing the axle and the car's up on the lift but...what a wrestling match.
Something else that you're noticing...liqufied grease drooling from the inner CV cup with the joint separated...that's a strong indication your inner CVs need repacking and with better grease. If the grease turns thin and runs too long in a compromised state, you'll increase the chances of premature wear on your inner drivers.
I look upon it as routine maintenance and a good way to keep an eye on your boots and your inner CV joint conditions (and everything else regarding your steering knuckles like tie-rod ends and general brake-caliper condition).
Has worked very well for me over the years.
It's a pretty-easy and pretty-fast procedure for the benefits provided.
Good luck.
