Hi Wayne,
Instead of putting it in the ad I want to discuss buying cores with each customer on a case by case basis so the price is as listed with a possible discount if you have a core I really need. Just the cost of shipping can be more than the value of some cores these days.
I've rebuilt a few Saab manual sidewinders but not enough to justify investing in the tools and parts inventory to do it regularly. One problem is that you need a large used parts inventory to rebuild these guys economically. New parts are mostly NLA and most owners wouldn't like the price that results from installing all NEW parts (as needed) anyway. A 1200-1800 USD rebuild can turn into a 3000 USD rebuild real fast once you start installing a bunch of brand new parts and of course all those parts are strictly Saab so there was only one source BEFORE Saab vanished ($$$$$$$).
Assuming your gearbox if filled with the correct lubricant then that loud whine is probably due to some component (gear, shaft or bearing) that changes it's position (radially or axially) when the torque it experiences is reversed while rolling in neutral. Unfortunately that's typically the result of a defective thrust washer, bearing or other component and is usually a harbinger of imminent failure. It might quiet down if different oil or an additive is installed but it won't be fixed.
