Folks,
I am helping my friend with a ‘92 turbo vert with ABS gremlins… all of my 900s were non-ABS cars so I’m a bit lost…
The symptom is intermittent but more often than not.
Switch the key to on
ABS light comes on
Hear pump run if required to pressurize accumulator
Normal “click”/“clunk sound from pump area
Light goes out
Turn key to start position
Engine cranks, starts, idles
ABS light stays on
He threw a ton of parts at it - whole accumulator/pump assembly, three ECUs, and he checked all the wheel sensors with a multimeter.
I checked the flash codes and it’s 4444… nothing stored.
He noticed if he turned the key back towards the start position (hitting the safety stop), and releasing it back to the run position, then you’d hear the click from the pump area and the light would go out. I discovered pulling the 10A ABS fuse and reinserting it produced the same result.
It’s as if the ABS computer isn’t “waking up” right after cranking, and doing anything to interrupt and reapply power gets it to “boot”.
The engine seemed to be spinning slowly on the starter, so I wondered if low voltage might be disturbing the ABS computer. I tested voltage during cranking… it went below 9.5V so we dropped in a strong battery, got cranking voltage to stabilize above 11V, no change. Voltage in the mid 13s with the alternator running at idle, pretty standard… I wondered if the alternator was doing anything funkier, so we took it out of the equation. No change.
Any thoughts?
Kind thanks!
