I've seen many post regarding how to replace the sensor, but I have a little twist here that I haven't seen addressed in other posts.
My car is a '90 turbo with the O2 sensor underneath the 90 degree elbow pipe connecting the turbo and the exhaust manifold. It's the original O2 sensor (32 years old) and with my check engine light flickering, it's time for replacement.
I've been able to remove the 3 nuts from the exhaust flange and the 3 nuts that fasten to the long studs sticking out of the turbo and have replaced all nuts with new stainless steel nuts and anti-seize compound since they were quite difficult to remove, but here's the kicker.....I cannot get that little elbow pipe to move once all 6 nuts are removed!
I know it has to pull straight out towards where the battery is situated due to the long stud at the bottom of the turbo, but even when tapping the elbow with a hammer hoping to break a seal, it doesn't move. I don't want to hit the elbow hard because I'm concerned that the elbow could crack. I also tried using a chiesel on the seam between the turbo and elbow, but again I'm concerned about cracking or chipping any metal that would compromise an air-tight seal.
All posts and 'Youtube' videos just say to remove the 6 nuts and remove the elbow....removing the elbow is anything but straight-foward for me......has anyone encountered this?
One other point, assuming that I can remove the elbow, when reinstalling it, are there any gaskets on either end of the elbow? I haven't seen any mention that either.
Thanks for any responses.
