replacement power steering rack suddenly has no power Posted by ryan [Email] (#2222) [Profile/Gallery] (more from ryan) on Tue, 24 May 2022 21:47:15 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
The rack in my car was leaking like crazy, so I tracked down a good rack from a '93 and had it rebuilt by Maval. I also got new hoses, new outer tie rods, and an inline-filter that Maval recommended installing. The steering pump in the car itself was replaced maybe a year ago.
Driving the car home, it felt fine, but when I got off the freeway at lower RPMS and on surface streets, the steering felt stiff. When I finally got to my driveway, at idle there was basically zero power steering. If I revved up the engine, some power would come back.
I drove the car then to a storage spot, and turned the steering wheel back and forth a few times. After that it seemed to be working more normally, but I didn't drive the car much afterwards and just parked it. There is no noise coming from the system at all and the fluid level looks fine.
I was reading some about having to sometimes bleed the system by turning the steering wheel back and forth a bunch of times with the engine off. Could that be the issue? Air in the system? But would you hear noise then?
