Okay, I pulled the alternator over the weekend and all of my bushings were totally smoked, and one of my voltage regulator screws had backed out, so that was likely it. Cleaned up the VR connections and all of the other connections (the + wire, the exciter) and things are looking much much more steady from my dash voltage gauge. I haven't noticed the headlights doing the flicker yet
However, I definitely have some wiring issues on my turn signals. I dont have connectors anymore (they all rotted away, typical saab trash). So I probably have something backwards or incorrect. I'll go over those all double and see if that helps as well. I noticed my right indicator light (one the fender), was halfway lit up when my blinker is off Yikes!)
Second update... My aluminum bushings I had turned - they were off by about .5mm to small. I'm going to have another set made.
Third note, as many times as i have done the alternator bracket on this car, I reject the remark that it is 'easy'. I know the tricks, I have the tools, I still always bust my knuckle or something.
So all that's wrapped up and now the alternator isnt jumping around like crazy. However, now have a god awful high pitched noise in my belt area (even with the belts off!). I must have dropped a screwdriver or left a bolt slightly loose something because it sounds like something is rattling around.
In the meantime, I found 2 vacuum leaks (btw, whoever told me the tip, probably it was Jeff in Reading) to take a 2inch PVC cap and attach an air hose line to it, perfect way to test for leaks. It slots perfectly in where the AMM does. I use that in concert with either my powered brake bleeder apparatus ( Motive Products Pressure Brake Bleeder 0100), or you can hook it an portable air tank that has like 5-10 PSI on it (or more if you have a regulator). One of my brake intake manifold nipples was just... open. Not sure what it's for - its the one on the bottom of the manifold right next to the AMM). I just capped it off.
So now that's capped off, I have to retune my AMM since my O2 sensor output now was pegged at 'rich' after closing those 2 ports under idle, and lean near boost. It's still registering lean at boost. Not sure, I have been chasing this knock light issue for a few months and it almost feels like maybe I do have a knock issue! or it could be this banging thing just causing the knock pickup to go off more than it should.
Anyway, another day in the life.
